Purpose

Provides general labor in support of the maintenance function.
Major Responsibilities

  • Performs general labor tasks independently, or in support of other maintenance activities, at the direction of the Superintendent
  • Performs grounds maintenance tasks, including, but not limited to: mowing, edging, weeding, herbicide application, fertilizer application, pavement striping, fence repairs, trash collection and general cleanup
  • Performs facilities maintenance tasks, including, but not limited to: wall patching, painting, flooring repairs, plumbing, carpentry, and janitorial
  • Operates snow removal equipment and performs snow and ice control duties, including, but not limited to: plowing, shoveling, sweeping, and application of deicing materials
  • Performs traffic control duties in support of other maintenance activities
  • Performs all other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education/Experience:
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Two years' experience as a laborer in grounds keeping, construction, maintenance or a related field
  • Valid state driver license, free of serious or frequent traffic violations
  • Must have, or be able to obtain in the first six months of employment, certification in the operation of forklifts and man-lift devices
  • Must have, or be able to obtain in the first six months of employment, a Washington State flagger certification
Knowledge/Skills:
  • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both written and verbally
  • Must show a high level of professional poise and personal bearing to deal with people and the ability to establish effective working relationships with others
  • Must be able to work independently and use good judgment
Physical Requirements:
  • Able to move about facilities & all areas of responsibility
  • Must be able to bend, twist, and lift up to fifty pounds on a regular basis with the ability to lift seventy-five pounds on occasion
  • Position requires being able to use hands to finger, handle and feel. Must be able to reach with hands and arms
  • Must be able to climb and balance as well as being able to stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl
  • Must be able to talk, hear and smell
  • Ability to communicate via email and phone
Security/Safety:
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain an Airport security badge as a condition of employment.
  • This is a safety sensitive position.

WORKING CONTACTS WITH OTHERS (INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL):
Regular contact with other departments, tenants and the public.

WORKING CONDITIONS, TRAVEL, ENVIRONMENT AND POTENTIAL HAZARDS:
Work location may vary, depending on assignment, with occasional travel on Airport complex and local community. Work may be performed around hazards in the mechanical shop including moving, mechanical parts, noise, chemicals. Some work is performed in high, precarious places. There may be exposure to fumes, airborne particles, petroleum products and other chemicals, as well as exposure to weather extremes. This is a moderately noisy to loud work environment with some exposure to electrical shock risk and vibration. Hearing protection and safety glasses are provided and required for some tasks.

  • Trucks and automobiles
  • Various types of light-to-medium, non-CDL required equipment, as determined by department needs
  • Hand tools and power tools
  • Lift trucks and man lift devices


Spokane Airport provides a generous benefit package. Currently, we cover the employee at 100% of the premium cost and any dependents at 80%. We offer four plan choices for medical coverage (includes vision) through Kaiser Permanente. The Airport contributes to a Health Savings Account (HSA) for high deductible plans and a Health Reimbursement Account (HRA) for the other plans. Dental coverage is through MetLife. Additionally, the Airport provides life insurance at two times the annual salary. Optional life insurance is also available. Retirement is through the Washington State Department of Retirement System - PERS Plan. The Airport provides an employee assistance program through BHO, and an employee wellness program. Parking is provided.

The Airport recognizes 11 holidays. Vacation is earned at eight (8) hours a month for the first five (5) years and increases every five (5) years. Sick leave accrues at eight (8) hours a month. The Airport also provides military and jury leave.
