DESCRIPTION :

The Communication Studies Department offers classes in the following: Fundamentals of Communication, Public Speaking, Introduction to Communication, Interpersonal Communication, and Small Group Communication. A detailed description of courses and information about the department can be found at .

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and Deliver Instruction
    • Design and implement engaging lesson plans that cover fundamentals of public speaking, including speech structure, delivery, audience analysis, and rhetorical strategies.
    • Teach students how to research, write, and present various types of speeches (informative, persuasive, impromptu, etc.).
  • Create a Supportive Learning Environment
    • Foster an inclusive classroom culture that encourages participation, critical thinking, and respectful feedback.
    • Help students overcome public speaking anxiety through supportive coaching and confidence-building exercises.
  • Assessment and Feedback
    • Evaluate student speeches and written work using clear rubrics and performance criteria.
    • Provide constructive, individualized feedback to guide student improvement.
  • Curriculum Development
    • Update and adapt course materials to reflect current communication theories, diverse perspectives, and technological tools (e.g., virtual presentations).
    • Align instruction with departmental learning outcomes and accreditation standards.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduate degree in Communication Studies.
  • One year of successful experience as a Communication Studies instructor or teaching assistant at the college level. Other applicable experiences may be considered.
  • Clear Demonstration of Experience in Online Teaching
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with Canvas, either as an instructor, teaching assistant or student.
  • Ability to teach in a variety of formats, including hybrid and online.
  • Ability to incorporate a variety of instructional strategies.
  • Ability to incorporate culture and social diversity within the course content.
  • Ability to teach at a variety of times, including evening.
  • Experience working with Running Start students and adult learners.
  • Experience working with a culturally diverse student population.
  • Coursework and/or teaching experience in race, class, and gender.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written English.
PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is typically performed in a classroom, office, or online from home and requires standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time. The ability to communicate effectively is essential. Instructors are required to use a computer in the work environment.

COMPENSATION:

Work schedule is based on an eleven week quarterly schedule and could vary each quarter. Salary is dependent upon contract load and mode of instruction. A standard five-credit "lecture mode" class would be approximately $6,208 at Step A. The special assignment rate of $45 per hour and meetings are paid according to the CBA stipend rate starting at $55 for meetings that are .5 hours to less than 2 hours.
