Summary of Position
The General Manager assumes responsibility and is accountable for customer retention and the profitability of each department in the dealership on behalf of the President and Executive Manager. The GM will fulfill responsibilities by using sound business management practices and plan, motivate, and coordinate the activities of the dealership management team.
Responsibilities
- Provide enthusiastic leadership to help shape employees' attitudes and morale.
- Work with the Dealer to hire, train, and motivate all dealership department managers.
- Direct and monitor all dealership management and supervisory personnel and complete formal performance reviews for direct reports at regularly scheduled intervals.
- Terminate or recommend termination of employees who do not demonstrate corporate values when interacting with other employees or customers.
- Resolve and refer employee relations issues to the dealership HR department.
- Review and recommend all requests for compensation changes to the Dealer.
- Recommend training for employees that are appropriate for the dealership's value of excellence to Dealer.
- Attend training as requested by Knudtsen Foothills Lincoln Mazda or the manufacturer.
- Work with the Dealer to plan dealership operations, including budget and forecast, for the coming year and submit to the dealer for approval.
- Meet with each direct report to develop monthly and annual goals, forecasts, and objectives for revenue, expenses, and profitability, and to review actual performance to KPIs.
- Meet with the Dealer and Office Manager at least monthly to review departmental forecasts for consistency with the annual forecast.
- Monitor the Executive Dashboard in Tekion Analytics and work with the Dealer to recommend improved courses of action as necessary.
- Provide the Dealer with accurate weekly reports on the financial condition of the dealership.
- Certify all schedules as clean prior to month end.
- Ensure the financial statement is complete and accurate in enough time to submit a financial statement to the factory before the 5th business day of the month.
- Maintain good working relationships with lenders and factory personnel.
- Manage dealership participation and reward in manufacturer programs.
- Assist in creating dealership and departmental policies and procedures, communicating them to dealership associates, and ensuring that they are understood and followed.
- Develop merchandising strategies and assist in creating effective, cost-efficient advertising programs for all gross-generating departments.
- Manage the dealership's reputation and work immediately to rectify customer relations issues reported to the dealership directly.
- Participate in generating and developing leads for the dealership.
- Delegate responsibility to department managers.
- Preside over meetings as appropriate.
- Other tasks as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for the direct supervision of the Office Manager, General Sales Managers, Service Manager, and Parts Manager. Assist with the supervision of Sales Managers, Finance Managers, the Business Development Center in both Sales and Service, Used Car Manager, Inventory Managers and the Lot Supervisor.
Qualifications
- A team player focused on providing ethical, exemplary customer service and leadership for employees.
- Self-motivated with the ability to set and achieve targeted goals.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- A Bachelor's degree from an accredited, four-year college or university, plus one-year additional related training and two to four years of experience as a General Sales Manager or Fixed Operations Manager.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Working knowledge of computers, basic software, and Internet, and ability to learn database management and customer relationship software.
- Must be able to get in and out of vehicles with ease. Can lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Have a valid driver's license.
- Pass a motor vehicle report and possess a safe driving record.
- Pass a criminal background check, credit check, and drug test.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The environment for the General Manager varies, but often is an office setting and working in a car showroom. The General Manager will be required to walk the dealership property and may encounter inclement weather.
