The primary role of the Senior Mechanical Engineer is to function as a “machine builder/ integrator”. The role is responsible for mechanical design of Automation assemblies; performing conceptual design, thermal and mechanical analysis; preparing design sketches, layouts, selecting raw materials, developing specs for product and preparing reports.
As a member of the automation team, you will partner with others to identify opportunities within Advanced Materials for improved efficiency, performance, and safety through industrial automation and IT systems by carefully evaluating all plant processes/systems and working with key stake holders. You will provide strategic vision and concept design for Advanced Materials all automation projects, and report to the site leadership on a regular basis on strategic vision and potential projects identified and work with the site to determine potential project ROI, justification, and prioritization based on plant needs.
You will report to our Director, ESS Automation Engineering and Digitization and work out of our Spokane, WA location on a hybrid work schedule. For the first 90 days, New Hires must be prepared to work 100% onsite M-F.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Produce designs that meet performance, cost, and manufacturability goals.
Performs cost estimation/analysis, detailed mechanical engineering design, design reviews, tolerance analysis, structural and thermal analysis using design software and risk/hazard analysis.
Conduct investigations or tests/POC pertaining to the development of new designs, methods, material, or processes.
Recommend necessary improvements and corrections to evaluation and qualification test specifications, technical analyses, and designs, to insure successful project completion.
Monitor and control assigned projects to assure compliance with approved procedures, methods, quality standards and regulations.
Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions then make recommendations and/or decisions based on the facts.
Design and implement 4,5,6 axis Robots, SCARA robo, and industrial vision system hardware and software (as part of integrated assemblies)
Design, select, and specify sensors, electrical, control, and safety systems for complex industrial automation systems
Perform safety and/or hazard analysis and regulatory compliance assessments by identifying key issues and risks in order to comply with applicable standards, policies, and regulations including (but not limited to): ANSI, CE, IEC, IEEE, ISA, ISO, NEC, NEMA, NFPA, OSHA, UL
Partner with the purchasing department to develop and manage a network of component suppliers, integrators, machine builders and software providers and leverage relationships to streamline design and construction processes. Serve as a technical knowledge expert during negotiations with vendors to ensure all hardware and software is delivered at the best available price.
Develop and implement engineering best practices based on knowledge of applicable standards and regulations including (but not limited to) AISI, ANSI, ASME, ASTM, CE, DIN, IEC, IEEE, ISA, ISO, NEC, NEMA, NFPA, OSHA, SAE, UL
Develop key documentation for all major capital projects (User Functional Requirement Specification, Technical Specifications, Bill of Material, Assembly and Detail drawings, user manuals, troubleshooting guides, ect...)
Review and identify critical design criteria, specifications, and functionality tests to determine scope of Factory Acceptance Testing, Site Acceptance Testing, and commissioning and verification testing
Work closely to decide how to build the machine – Internally (source parts from outside and assemble with in-house team) or externally with a 3rd party in partnership with Engineering and Sourcing teams
Develop and manage a network of component suppliers, integrators, machine builders and software providers and leverage relationships to streamline design and construction processes
When designing equipment in partnership with 3rd party machine builders –Share the concept and the URS, functional specifications and overseeing the technical aspects of machine design and build and managing the timeline and/or in partnership with project managers, other engineering groups.
As a member of the automation team, participate in the development of capital budgets and timelines for all projects and track all projects to ensure projects are delivered on-time and under budget
Provide technical leadership and supervision of all construction-related activities including machine cell fabrication and assembly, modifications to building structure, installation of utilities, and installation, commissioning, and integration of machine cells and material handling systems into a live 24/7 production environment
Provide Automation Technician level hands-on skills in mechanical end electrical systems to assist with machine fabrication and assembly, testing, installation, commissioning, integration, and troubleshooting support
Propose improvements to old design and suggest new designs keeping process performance similar or better than today in terms of EER, cycletime, throughput, yield, product quality etc.
Identify, research, and implement state of the art manufacturing technologies, practices, and standards
The annual base salary range for this position is $114,000 - $137,000. Please note that this salary information serves as a general guideline. YOU MUST HAVE
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME)
4+ years of experience in the Mechanical Engineering field
Working experience with product lifecycle management (PLM), finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD)
Hands-on experience with computer-aided engineering (CAM) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAE)
WE VALUE
Familiarity with 2D or 3D engineering design and manufacturing tools (e.g., AutoCAD, Solidworks, ProE, Omniverse or other)
Adequate knowledge of engineering analysis tools (ANSYS, COSMOS, ProMechanica or similar)
Mathematical computing and analysis tools knowledge (Matlab, Excel, LabView etc)
Solid understanding of core concepts including mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, materials science etc.
Creativity and analytical skills
Ability to communicate technical knowledge in a clear and understandable manner
Technical writing skills
Knowledge of electronics packaging design principles.
