Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is seeking a responsible civil engineer to join the System Operations, Planning, and Analysis (SOPA) Wastewater Team that manages existing and future wastewater facilities. If you have experience with combined sewer overflow facilities, whether in design, construction, operations, or NPDES (National Pollution Discharge Elimination System) monitoring & reporting, we encourage you to apply. This is a new position to support optimization of the Ship Canal Water Quality Facility, a Combined Sewer Overflow storage tunnel that will serve North Seattle to reduce discharges to the Lake Washington Ship Canal. This position will join an experienced team that monitors and optimizes existing combined sewer overflow facilities and wastewater pump stations throughout the City of Seattle.

Key Responsibilities:

• Assess Performance: Evaluate SPU's wastewater facilities, including operable and passive Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) storage and wastewater pump stations.
• Operational Support: Provide real-time operational support, especially during wet weather events, to SPU Operations Control Center (OCC) staff.
• Technical Analysis: Perform hydraulic calculations, investigate, and analyze facility performance. Review flow monitoring data and analyze trends.
• Documentation: Review and update facility documentation such as Operations & Maintenance Manuals and Facility Operation Plans.
• Project Involvement: Serve as a SOPA point of contact during the design, construction, commissioning, stabilization, and operations of wastewater capital projects.
• Troubleshooting: Resolve operational issues and prepare documentation for the implementation of improvements as needed.
• Training: Prepare and provide annual facility operations training.

Experience: Five (5) years of professional civil engineering experience.

Education: A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology or equivalent.

Education and Experience Equivalency: In lieu of a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited program, nine (9) years of relevant civil engineering work experience under the supervision of a licensed engineer may be substituted. There is no equivalency for the PE license.

Required Qualifications:

• Professional Engineer License: Must be registered as a Professional Engineer in the State of Washington.
• Driver's License: A current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility is required.

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

• Most work is performed in a normal City work/office environment.
• Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and/or holidays as needed to provide 24/7 standby support on a rotational basis.
• Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances, and work in or near construction sites.
• May be required to lift over 50 pounds.
• May be required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience with operable facilities, preferably wastewater facilities.
• Experience interpreting design and as-built drawings.
• Technical understanding of wastewater system hydraulics.
• Demonstrated ability to work and communicate openly, and coordinate efficiently, within a team environment.
• Ability to communicate and work effectively within a multi-cultural workforce serving a diverse customer base.

The full salary range for this position is $72.38 - $84.28 Hourly.

Work Schedule: This position allows for a flexible work schedule. Employees will be required to come into the office three times a week. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are mandatory days for employees in the Seattle Public Utilities' Drainage & Wastewater Line of Business.
