The Director of Pricing will lead the development and execution of innovative, data-driven pricing strategies in the firm's Insurance & IP, Energy, Healthcare, and Life Sciences Departments, including advising and supporting attorneys and the firm's key clients in creating value-based pricing solutions, fee proposals, RFPs, and rate analysis that enhance profitability and improve client relationships by aligning fee structures with their financial needs. Within this role, the Director will play a central role working across administrative departments, to ensure pricing remains in line with firm standards and strategic decisions are made in a data-driven and financially informed manner.
The Director of Pricing will ensure that practices, groups, and partners have a clear understanding of their financial health and how to help improve firm financials. Working directly with the Department Chairs, Practice Group Financial Partners and Practice Management team, the Director of Pricing will present financial updates to the practice groups, educate them on how their rates compare to their industry & practice group peers, and develop strategies that will improve the profitability of the firm. The Director of Pricing will also work closely with other business-facing roles, including Practice Management and Business Development, to drive opportunities for growth across the firm.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Lead a team and serve as the head pricing and financial contact for all partners in the Insurance and IP, Energy, and Healthcare and Life Sciences departments.
Develop data-driven pricing strategies that provide a high level of care and understanding of clients' business needs while improving profitability and financial performance for the firm.
Consult with attorneys to develop pricing proposals and budgets and client negotiation strategies, including locating sample budgets and other relevant matter experience, data mining and analysis of historical matters in the firm's knowledge management environment, and drafting pricing-related communications.
Serve as a trusted advisor and face of the pricing team, developing and maintaining the highest levels of confidence and support from the firm.
Manage approval requests for AFAs and client/matter discounts in coordination with direct reports and practice group leadership.
Engage with leadership to create and implement tools and processes to assist in agreement tracking and the rate agreement renewal process, ensuring proactive management of active rate agreements.
Analyze the financial impact of pricing arrangements and work with client teams and business units to develop strategies to improve profitability. Assist in developing and implementing economic models to project the financial impact of proposed pricing arrangements and staffing models.
Serve as an expert within the legal pricing community to elevate the visibility of the firm and its pricing team, help with recruiting efforts, and better understand competitive pressures.
Perform analysis to support pricing decisions and the firm's efforts to drive effective project management.
Serves as a leader or mentor to staff, including assigning or monitoring work and providing direction to accomplish goals.
Maintain confidential information.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Strong knowledge of market research resources and financial reporting.
Proven record of excellent financial modeling skills, analytical ability, and ability to comprehend and clearly communicate data.
Ability and willingness to perform detailed analyses independently.
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
Knowledge of BI concepts; additional knowledge of Tableau beneficial.
Proven ability to identify and analyze issues and problems and to work towards solutions
Superior interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written) and sound political acumen, with professional persistence.
Ability to deal with all levels of legal, management, and support staff effectively and professionally.
Ability to influence individuals to follow established programs and information sharing protocols.
Advanced knowledge of mathematical and statistical concepts and the ability to apply this knowledge to large volumes of data to reach meaningful conclusions
Strong technical orientation, including proficiency with Microsoft Office applications such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, with an aptitude and willingness to learn and adapt to evolving technologies as appropriate.
Ability to thrive managing a team in a fast-paced environment with multiple deadlines and competing priorities with minimal oversight and support.
Strong attention to detail, exceptional analytical skills, and superior organizational ability to ensure that all projects and responsibilities across the team are met or exceeded efficiently and accurately.
Ability and willingness to travel periodically, approximately 25% of the time.
Education and/or Experience:
Bachelor's degree, with JD or MBA preferred; any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position is preferred.
Minimum ten (10) years' experience in a large law firm, leading professional services firm, or corporate legal department.
Minimum five (5) years previous experience managing direct reports and teams.
