The Quatrefoil Senior Exhibit Designer/Studio Director is responsible for creating award winning, accessible, museum-grade experiences, weaving together systems and strategies of content delivery that engage the visitor emotionally, physically and intellectually, ensuring that the exhibition's diverse messages and mediums are balanced and well-integrated.
The successful candidate will coordinate and mentor Quatrefoil's creative studio teams. The Studio Director will work with other design leads to assemble creative teams for each of Quatrefoil's projects. He/She/They will monitor team workload and performance. This position works across all projects in the office.
This opening is a key leadership position within the Quatrefoil team and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to help shape Quatrefoil's future.
Responsibilities
Lead the Quatrefoil creative team on multiple exhibit design projects to produce exhibits and experiences that are:
-Creative and innovative;
-Accessible and inclusive;
-Communicate the client's stories, educational and affective goals;
-Meet the constraints imposed by space, schedule and budget;
-Adhere to the highest standards of quality and ethics.
In this context, tasks include.
-Lead client communication from pre-contract to post-opening phases.
-Lead the creative team of in-house and freelance designers and collaborators throughout the design
process;
-Conceptualize and visualize design ideas and approaches for museum exhibits and other informal education experiences;
-Collaborate with the Quatrefoil Project Manager to ensure projects are delivered on schedule and
budget;
-Oversee the creation of design phase deliverable packages;
-With the Quatrefoil Project Manager, assign staff to projects, monitor workload and recommend
adjustments;
-Conduct interviews with potential new hires and performance reviews with reports.
-Mentor junior team members on best use of design tools and practices;
-Monitor studio workload for skill and capacity requirements
-Stay current with trends and requirements regarding sustainable and accessible design.
-Represent Quatrefoil at industry events and conferences, publish papers and submit session
proposals.
-As needed, present to prospective clients
-As needed, contribute to Quatrefoil business development and proposal writing effort.
Qualifications
-10-15 years experience in exhibit, museum, or experiential design, leading creative teams
-Strong portfolio showcasing both conceptual and technical design skills
-Proficiency in CAD software (Vectorworks and Sketchup preferred), hand-drawing and sketching
-Track record of managing diverse teams and communicating effectively with clients
-Empathetic, passionate and inclusive team leadership
-Knowledge of ADA guidelines, sustainability practices, and museum standards
The position reports to a Quatrefoil Partner and will have design staff reports.
Some travel required (approx. 10-20%)
