Bring Safety, Dignity, and Compassion to the Frontlines of Care

Security Specialist | Full-Time | Spokane, WA

Schedule: Friday-Monday | 5:00 PM - 3:00 AM | Shift Differential Included

At VOA of Spokane, we believe that safety and compassion go hand-in-hand. We're looking for a Security Specialist who wants to do more than just "watch the door." In this role, you'll be a trusted presence in our housing and shelter programs-helping to maintain calm, build rapport, and protect the dignity of everyone we serve.

This is an opportunity to join a mission-driven team that views security as a form of care and safety as a shared responsibility. If you're calm under pressure, believe in treating people with respect, and want your work to make a real impact, we'd love to meet you.

What You'll Do:

  • Maintain a visible, supportive, and professional presence across VOA housing and shelter sites
  • De-escalate situations with empathy, confidence, and clear communication
  • Monitor security systems, patrol interior/exterior areas, and respond to incidents as needed
  • Communicate with emergency services and program staff to ensure safety and resolution
  • Complete timely, accurate reports and documentation for shift activities and incidents
  • Foster positive relationships with clients and team members, helping connect individuals to support services when appropriate
Schedule & Compensation:
  • Set schedule: Friday through Monday, 5:00 PM - 3:00 AM
  • Full-time, hourly, non-exempt position
  • Night shift differential is paid in addition to the base hourly rate
  • Weekend and holiday availability are required as part of this schedule
Requirements

What You Bring:
  • At least 2 years of experience in security, crisis response, or working with vulnerable populations (e.g., housing, shelters, behavioral health, etc.)
  • Strong verbal de-escalation and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in high-pressure or emergency situations
  • A trauma-informed, empathetic approach to working with individuals in crisis
  • Valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and ability to pass a background check
Bonus Points For:
  • Experience in social work or housing-first service models
  • Familiarity with harm reduction, motivational interviewing, or reflective listening
  • Comfort working with culturally diverse populations and individuals in emotional or physical distress

Why Join VOA?
At VOA, we don't believe in clinical walls or one-size-fits-all solutions. We believe in meeting people where they are-without judgment, without fear, and without giving up on anyone. Our Security Specialists are key to that mission. You'll receive the training, support, and trust to do meaningful work every day.
