Job Purpose:

In concert with Production Manager, supervise and carry out all aspects of technical theatre production and facility management for the Theatre & Dance Department. The Technical Director (TD) will work closely with students in work-study positions, technical supervision, and informal mentorship.

Essential Functions:

  • 40% - Technical Production
    • Train and mentor students on the use of audio, lighting and projection equipment in all performance spaces where Theatre and Dance produce work.
    • Serve as an advisor to directors, producers, and creative teams to translate creative needs into executable plans.
    • Attend tech week rehearsals and production meetings to supervise and assist in the technical aspects of mounting the production.
    • Train and support crews to ensure technical readiness for all Theatre and Dance productions.
    • Coordinate production needs with the MWPAC staff as required.
  • 35% - Stage Carpentry and Fabrication
    • Read and build from scale design drawings.
    • Create construction drawings from design elevations.
    • Oversee construction of scenery and stage props for all Theatre and Dance productions (approx. 10-12 of varying scope) per academic year.
    • Oversee hang and focus of lighting, projection and audio support instruments in all Theatre and Dance facilities.
    • Lead load-ins, installs, set-ups, and strikes for all productions.
    • Facilitate, contribute to, and guide the careful, safe, and effective construction, installation, and maintenance of scenery and other technical elements.
    • Utilize digital design, multimedia design, video and/or visual media systems and software as required.
    • Consult with the Production Manager (PM) to fully understand and implement the rules, regulations, safety procedures, and protocols to follow during the build production process.
    • Manage and train students with varying skill level in the scene shops working as work study or for course credit.
  • 25% - Maintain Scene Shops and Magnuson Theatre
    • Maintain safe, clean and professional work environment.
    • Ensure the Theatre and Dance facilities are in compliance with safety regulations (OSHA).
    • Maintain shop equipment and purchase supplies, including scene shop tools, lighting equipment, sound equipment, theatrical rigging, repair equipment, in consultation with the PM.
    • Oversee work study personnel.
    • Oversee set up, use, and maintenance of sound, video/ projection, and lighting equipment.
    • Provide technical support for college and community use beyond theatre productions during formal rental agreements.
  • Additional Duties as Assigned by the Department

Educational Requirement:

Bachelor's Degree

Years of Related Experience Requirement:

3 years

In lieu of the educational qualifications, candidates may qualify with equivalent professional experience at a ratio of one year of experience for each year of required education.

Certifications and/or Licensures:

Valid drivers' license

Skills & Abilities:

Stage carpentry experience;
Ability to maintain a safe, welcoming, and clean work environment;
Ability to assign tasks appropriately; read and build scale drawings.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Strong computer skills including CAD/Vectorworks software, Adobe Suite, ETC lighting console, Qlab, and Microsoft Office.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ability to create construction drawings from design elevations.
Knowledge of stage rigging and welding.

In-Office Presence - Ability to work on-site in typical office setting and participate in in-person meetings with colleagues: 5 days/week

The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to offer for this position: $23.61 -$24.10/hour

Pay Range:

Minimum Salary (Non-Exempt): 23.62

Midpoint Salary (Non-Exempt): 29.52

Maximum Salary (Non-Exempt): 35.42
