The Director of Finance is a key leadership role with oversight of the firm's full financial operations. This individual will report directly to the CFO and directly manage a team of senior managers and department leads across all core finance areas, including budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, tax, audit, payroll, AP/AR, and financial systems. This is a highly visible position, offering the chance to contribute to long-term strategy and firmwide decision-making. Candidates with prior law firm or professional services leadership experience are strongly preferred.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a trusted advisor to firm leadership on all financial matters, including forecasting, budgeting, profitability, and capital planning.
- Directly manage a team of experienced managers and senior managers across the accounting and finance function.
- Oversee day-to-day financial operations including general ledger, tax, audit, banking, payroll, and financial systems.
- Lead the annual budget process and provide ongoing forecasting and variance analysis throughout the year.
- Provide customized reporting and financial analysis to support partner and associate evaluations and firmwide compensation planning.
- Manage external audits and ensure compliance with financial controls, GAAP standards, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Evaluate and implement improvements to accounting policies, processes, and internal systems.
- Collaborate with practice group leaders, administrative heads, and other stakeholders to align financial goals with firm priorities.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 10 years of senior-level experience in finance or accounting, preferably in a law firm or professional services environment.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business required; CPA and/or MBA strongly preferred.
- Extensive knowledge of GAAP and relevant regulatory frameworks.
- Proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop high-performing finance teams.
- Exceptional communication skills and executive presence.
- Strong analytical and strategic thinking capabilities; ability to distill complex data into actionable insights.
- Experience with Elite/3E or other law firm accounting systems strongly preferred.
