Site Description

The Maya Angelou Academy at the DC Department of Corrections is an alternative school serving incarcerated men and women ages 18-22 with individualized education plans. Located within the Central Treatment Facility, the school also supports students housed in the Central Detention Facility. Designed to meet the unique needs of justice-involved students requiring special education, the academy provides educational opportunities regardless of their academic history or current standing.

Position Overview

The School Psychologist will provide psychological services and support to students enrolled in a special education high school program located within an adult correctional facility. This role requires a highly skilled, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive professional who can assess, consult, and intervene to support students with emotional, behavioral, and learning needs in a secure setting. The School Psychologist will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to create and implement individualized education plans (IEPs), conduct evaluations, and promote mental wellness and academic growth for students navigating complex educational and life circumstances.

Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

Assessment & Evaluation

  • Conducts evaluations and re-evaluations for students as requested or warranted (psychological, IQ, cognitive, behavioral).
  • Interprets cognitive, academic, emotional, and social data to inform educational programming.
  • Articulates test results to adult students, school staff members, and other stakeholders in clear, understandable language, attending to cultural sensitivity.
  • Maintains accurate and legally compliant documentation in PowerSchool Special Programs.
  • Serves as a key member of the IEP team; actively participates in meetings and contributes to decision-making.
  • Collaborates with special educators, general educators, administrators, and social workers.
  • Provides staff consultation on behavior management strategies and student mental health concerns.

Compliance & Advocacy

  • Ensures all psychological services are in compliance with IDEA, ADA, and district special education regulations.
  • Advocates for students' educational and emotional needs within the correctional context.
  • Makes recommendations for purchasing assessment materials to ensure that the psychologist is adequately equipped with state-of-the-art resources.

Intervention & Support

  • Delivers individual and group counseling as required by students' IEPs, as needed.
  • Implements evidence-based, trauma-informed interventions that address social, emotional, and behavioral challenges.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree from an accredited school or university in educational, clinical, or school psychology, including 42 semester hours of graduate coursework and 500 hours of successful field experience in a school setting under the supervision of a certified school psychologist (required)
  • Must be eligible to acquire or must possess a DC certification as a psychologist (required)
  • Experience with special education eligibility and IEP processes
  • A clinical and/or counseling background with experience in supervising others and program development (preferred)
  • Experience working with opportunity or justice-involved youth (preferred)
