BACKGROUND

The National Center will serve as a hub for HBCUs to enhance instruction and provide real-world learning opportunities for students across the campusesand provide opportunities for faculty to engage in interdisciplinary scholarly research. In addition, the National Center would be a significant resource not only to the Universities, but also the community inareas ofinnovation, creativity, entrepreneurship, technology commercialization and regional technological and economic development.A major focus for the National Center and its regional HBCU partners is to engage the black business community in growing their enterprises, thereby having a positive impact on thecommunityand increasing employment and wealth for the black community.

The mission of theHoward University and PNCNational Center for Entrepreneurshipis to be a national resource for black businesses and entrepreneurship education at HBCUs across the country. Further, the National Center will seek to collaborate, communicate, and work with historically Black colleges and universities and their business community to enhance black business growth and successes. The National Center for Entrepreneurship will seek to advance the best practices and be a thought leader in research and practice of entrepreneurship for African American students and business owners.

Howard University is looking for an Executive Director who will serve as the visionary leader of the Howard University and PNCNational Center for Entrepreneurship.

INSTITUTIONAL BACKGROUND

Howard University is a federally chartered, - private, coeducational, nonsectarian, historically black university (HBCU) in Washington, D.C. It is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a research university with high research activity and is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

From its outset, it has been nonsectarian and open to people of all genders and races. In addition to the over 70 distinct undergraduate programs, Howard has graduate and professional programs in business, nursing, engineering, pharmacy, law, social work, education, communications, art, science, divinity, dentistry, and medicine. A hospital sits on the campus as well, serving as a key medical facility for many Washingtonians.

Howard is classified as a Tier 1 University and ranked #80 among national universities, and second among HBCUs by U.S. News & World Report. The Princeton Review ranked the school of business #1 in opportunities for minority students and in the top five for most competitive students. The National Law Journal ranked the law school among the top 25 in the nation for placing graduates at the best law firms. Howard has produced four Rhodes Scholars between 1986 and 2017. Between 1998 and 2009, Howard University produced a Marshall Scholar, two Truman Scholars, twenty-two Fulbright Scholars and ten Pickering Fellows. Howard University is the number one producer of African American Ph.D. recipients nationwide. The University has launched several exciting initiatives including the Karsh STEM Scholars program, aimed at producing a greater number of STEM PhD graduates of color. Additionally, Tech Exchange, a collaboration with Google provides an immersive experience to Computer Science students, aimed at increasing diversity in the Information Technology industry. The Howard Entertainment program is designed to diversify the entertainment industry by creating a pipeline for African American students and other marginalized populations to train and study alongside entertainment executives. It offers students a unique interdisciplinary curriculum, coupled with hands-on work experiences and networking with Amazon's industry partners.

The Executive Director will build on Howard University's powerful research history as they create thought leadership that not only prepares students to be entrepreneurs of the future, but also empowers, inspires and motivates them to be co-creators in what the future of business ownership looks like.

Position Overview

Howard University, one of the nation's premier institutions of higher education, is seeking an experienced, forward-thinking executive as its Howard University and PNCNational Center for Entrepreneurship. The Executive Director will report to the Office of the Dean in the School of Business.

The Executive Director will serve as visionary leader of the Howard University and PNCNational Center for Entrepreneurship. They will work to lead and build programs that will bring industry and academe together to prepare Howard students to meet the critical needs of leadership. This individual will serve as a critical broker between colleagues, students, the University and the broader community. In this position, the Executive Director will assume the responsibility of managing the strategic and operations of the Center including, working with other regional directors in the center network, developing curriculum and co-curricular activities, creating lecture opportunities for executives, establishing new relationships within varying sectors, creating program timelines, marketing of program outcomes, communications, and any other related duties to help the success of the Center. In addition, the Executive Director will track quantifiable data and statistical evidence to qualify the success of the Center. This will include tracking student success and recommend ways in which improvement could be to assure the success of the Center. The Executive Director will formally plan, assign, direct, and coordinate the work of the Center employees.

The Executive Director will be a University leader who will continue to drive institution-wide culture of innovation and best practices. This leader will foster a vibrant work environment and be a trusted advisor and partner to the senior leadership team and the University community.

Principal Accountabilities

  • An innovative, forward-thinking thought partner to lead the next chapter of the Center's creation.
  • Steward the numerous industry leaders who have committed time and financial resources to designing the program.
  • Work collaboratively with Deans at regional university locations and other HBCUs.
  • Building on the fundraising and stewardship success, continue to pitch engagement with the Center to new, prospective donors and/or industry partners.
  • Develop, manage, and execute the Center's strategic plan in collaboration with the School of Business and university administration.
  • Commitment to solving complex issues around inequities related to race, color, social, economic, and political circumstances and become a driver of change.
  • Manage a board of advisors to provide strategic insights about industry trends and translate that into actionable center programming.
  • Collaborate with external partners, and faculty to design curriculum and co-curricular activities, plan and implement programs, and manage student performance.
  • Work closely with the various academic departments, career services, and Office of Student Affairs to help create a cohort criterion, for participating students, for advanced training and instruction.
  • Leverage resources and the success of student outcomes to develop new partnerships and opportunities within the small business community.
  • Create sustainable programming, along with an evolving group of advisors, to employ industry practices for innovative out-of-classroom activities.
  • Plan events, workshop, career placement conferences to ensure student recruitment and engagement.
  • Perform specialized administrative and academic functions, including research and analyses, program coordination and monitoring, data collection, counseling, surveys, reports and recommends program changes.
  • Ensure that goals and objectives specified for the program are accomplished in accordance with priorities, time and funding limitations, or other specifications.
  • Develop and schedule a program work plan in accordance with specifications, objectives, and funding.
  • Prepare reports, financial statements and records on program activities, progress, status or related special reports.
  • Evaluate program effectiveness in order to develop and implement new or improved methods. Devise and implement evaluation methodologies.
  • Develop and facilitate workshops, meetings, or conferences with high impact on program and/or participants. Coordinate logistics, scheduling and participant communications. Lead and oversee an Annual National Conference.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Professional Experience/Qualifications

  • Relevant, senior leadership experience in a complex, dynamic environment. Experience with academic institutions and/or entrepreneurship preferred.
  • Experience in strategic management and ability to execute a strategic vision for a complex organization.
  • Ability to manage a network of corporate partners and experience working with C-suite executives to build relationships.
  • Experience in managing a board of advisor, board development and fund raising.
  • Skilled in planning work, ability to analyze, retain knowledge, show initiative and be resourceful in finding information pertaining to the job.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Communicate regularly and effectively with Donor leaders
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious work relations with faculty, staff, students and sponsors.
  • Ability to multi-task efficiently.
  • Experience as an entrepreneur
  • Master's degree preferred and significant relevant experience at senior management levels is required.
