Purpose

Performs semi-skilled, skilled and administrative work in maintaining airport vehicles. The equipment includes Fire Fighting vehicles, Police vehicles, Administrative vehicles, Airfield heavy equipment vehicles, and numerous pieces of power and non-powered support equipment.
Major Responsibilities

  • Maintains maintenance records for items repaired.
  • Maintains all Airport, Airport Business Park, and Felts Field vehicles, powered and non-powered support equipment.
  • Inspects and determines required repairs both major & minor.
  • Repairs engines both gasoline and diesel, transmissions, electrical and hydraulics.
  • Fabricates parts and special project equipment.
  • Maintains vehicles preventive maintenance program and assists the Maintenance Superintendent in annual budget projections and in writing equipment specifications.
  • Operates, diagnostic equipment/testing equipment.
  • Repairs brakes, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmissions, ignition, air conditioning, exhaust systems.
  • Cuts and welds metal and performs auto body repairs.
  • Orders parts & supplies for vehicle maintenance.
  • Performs other tasks as necessary to assist other crafts.
  • Provides aid and guidance to the public.
  • Observes all safety rules and performs other duties as assigned.
  • Notifies Airfield Superintendent of any job related problems including accidents and/or injuries.
  • Operates snow removal equipment.
  • Performs janitorial work as required.
Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
  • Graduate of a certified diesel and gasoline engine mechanic school
  • 4 years experience working on diesel and gasoline engines.
  • A combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills and ability to perform the duties of this position will be considered
  • Must possess a CDL Class B, CDL Class A preferred, with a driving record free of serious or frequent violations. Individual must have at time of hire or be able to obtain within the probationary period of employment. Failure to obtain may result in termination.
  • Qualified in arc and acetylene welding and have basic knowledge in pneumatic, hydraulic, hydrostatic and automotive electrical systems.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Must have a working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to maintenance and repair activities.
  • Must have a working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools used in equipment maintenance.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective preventive maintenance programs and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain effective accounting procedures.
  • Ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English.
  • Must be able to be trained to operate specialized equipment.
  • Be familiar with computers.
  • Must have poise and personal bearing to deal with all people. Must be able to establish a work relationship with peers, supervisor, and public.
  • Skill in operation of tools and equipment.
  • Must be able to schedule and prioritize tasks.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to operate job related equipment.
  • Must be able to maintain mobility within all areas of responsibilities.
  • Position requires being able to use hands to finger, handle and feel. Must be able to reach with hands and arms.
  • Must be able to climb and balance as well as being able to stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl.
  • Must be able to talk, hear and smell.
  • Must be able to bend, twist, and lift up to fifty pounds on a regular basis and seventy-five pounds on occasion.
SECURITY/SAFETY:
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain an Airport security badge as a condition of employment.
  • Must have a current, valid driver's license free of serious or frequent traffic violations.
  • This is a safety sensitive position.

WORKING CONTACTS WITH OTHERS (INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL)
  • CEO/Executive Director, Directors, Airport employees, Tenants, and the Public.
WORKING CONDITIONS, TRAVEL, ENVIRONMENT AND POTENTIAL HAZARDS
  • Work performed primarily in and around the Automotive Maintenance Shop. Exposure to fumes, airborne particles, chemicals, herbicides and petroleum products. Minimal exposure to cold, heat and outside weather conditions. Moderately noisy to loud work environment. Hearing and eye protection provided and required for some tasks. Some travel and attends service schools/classes.
SCOPE AND DEPTH OF BUDGET, FUNDS OR OTHER ASSETS MANAGED
  • Maintains proper inventory of parts for mechanical repairs.
EQUIPMENT OPERATION REQUIRED
  • All equipment assigned in support of the Airport operations, and Airfield maintenance on trucks, tractors, snow removal equipment i.e., hand power tools, welders, and some machine tools.

Spokane Airport provides a generous benefit package. Currently, we cover the employee at 100% of the premium cost and any dependents at 80%. We offer four plan choices for medical coverage (includes vision) through Kaiser Permanente. The Airport contributes to a Health Savings Account (HSA) for high deductible plans and a Health Reimbursement Account (HRA) for the other plans. Dental coverage is through MetLife. Additionally, the Airport provides life insurance at two times the annual salary. Optional life insurance is also available. Retirement is through the Washington State Department of Retirement System - PERS Plan. The Airport provides an employee assistance program through BHO, and an employee wellness program. Parking is provided.

The Airport recognizes 11 holidays. Vacation is earned at eight (8) hours a month for the first five (5) years and increases every five (5) years. Sick leave accrues at eight (8) hours a month. The Airport also provides military and jury leave.
