Caregivers working in Sally's House are caring for children in emergency situations for children 2 to 12 years of age that are removed from their home due to abuse, neglect, abandonment, or criminal activity. They provide a caring, safe, and loving home for up to 20 children at one time.

Caregivers must have a high school diploma or GED and at least one year of successful experience working with children. The skills and abilities required include being at least twenty-one years old, having effective communication and problem-solving skills, passing a DSHS criminal background check and a Salvation Army Child Safety background check, being free from communicable diseases as indicated by a TB screening, being emotionally mature and stable in order to provide consistency, structure, and nurturing, having CPR/First Aid training, Blood borne pathogen/HIV training, De-escalation and restraint training, TB test, Food Handlers permit, Child Safety Training, Monthly staff meeting attendance & trainings, Training Tracks required readings & reports for one year, having uninhibited physical mobility in bending and lifting up to 30 pounds, being capable of auditory and visual supervision of children, being able to verbally and physically interact with the children in care, being available to be on-call to cover other shifts during the week, and having high personal standards of cleanliness and thoroughness.
Essential duties include functioning as a team member, following all policies and procedures, communicating program needs & children's needs to supervisors, directly supervising children in care, providing consistency and structure, actively leading & participating in the children's daily activities, following posted schedules, documenting children's daily activities, modeling appropriate social and interpersonal behaviors, assisting the children in identifying and meeting their physical needs, following guidelines for the discipline of children, offering guidance to the children as needed, cleaning the facility when needed, doing laundry when needed, assisting with snow removal when necessary, serving food to the children at meal times and snack times, reporting allegations of abuse/neglect to a supervisor and to CPS within 24 hours, making sure that the facility remains secure by keeping windows and doors locked and by reporting any security concerns, contributing to a positive morale in the program, developing positive, professional relationships with coworkers, supporting new employees and practicum students by helping them understand the program and policies and procedures, assisting children in going to appointments and school as needed by riding along, or walking children to destinations, and all other duties as assigned.
Physical requirements include the ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis; the ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, automobile doors, and reach overhead; the ability to operate a telephone; the ability to operate a desktop computer; the ability to access and produce information from a computer; the ability to understand written information; and the ability to lift and carry 25-40 pounds on a regular basis.
