Summary of Functions:
This position reports directly to the Golf Course Superintendent and is responsible for the maintenance, repair, preventative service, and operational readiness of all golf course equipment to support Kalispel Golf and Country Club's (KGCC) premium course standards.
The Equipment Engineer is responsible for oversight of a comprehensive preventative maintenance program for all golf course equipment, directs training for team members in the proper and safe use and maintenance of the golf course equipment, assists the Golf Course Superintendent with maintaining a safe working environment in the maintenance building and on the course. Responsible for the cleanliness and overall appearance of the maintenance facility.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Understand and ensure compliance with health, safety and environmental requirements and regulations as applicable to golf course operations (Tribal, State and Federal).
- Make major and minor mechanical repairs on a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered equipment.
- Responsible for preventive maintenance scheduling and reporting.
- Place orders for parts and supplies as needed for equipment repairs and services.
- Keep up to date records and inventory of needed parts to maintain each piece of equipment.
- Train all staff in the safe operation of equipment, including pre and post operation procedures.
- Actively works in constant collaboration with Golf Course Superintendent and Assistant Golf Course Superintendents, as well as team members, to maintain awareness of service activities.
- Ensure all equipment is safe, efficient, and in operable condition at all times.
- Organizes and maintains a clean service area, operations building, and fuel storage area.
- Inspects, adjusts, diagnoses, and repairs mechanical defects in the many types of golf course maintenance equipment.
- Performs necessary machining, set up, grinding and maintenance of all reel and rotary cutting units.
- Performs general overhaul of engines.
- Repairs transmissions, differentials, carburetors, distributors, fuel pumps, steering systems, starters, generators, universal joints, hydraulic systems, and high-pressure pumps and valves.
- Has the ability to read and troubleshoot electrical, plumbing, and machine manuals and schematics.
- Installs and adjusts brakes.
- Installs batteries, tires, wiring, and glass.
- Performs machining, fabrication, and other welding work in making fittings used in automotive equipment.
- Performs occasional automotive painting or body and fender repair work.
- Maintains records of preventive maintenance schedules and needs, repairs made, purchase orders, parts inventory, fuel and lubricant usage, and time worked.
- Performs additional golf course related tasks as required.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly supervises Assistant Course Mechanic. This position carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and procedures, applicable laws, and regulations. Responsibilities include interview, hire, and train employees; assist in assigning and directing work; appraise performance; issue corrective actions, address complaints and resolve problems.
Other Requirements - Must maintain good and consistent attendance.
- Must have a general understanding of the game of golf.
- Responsible for following the proper dress code for the KGCC Groundskeeping staff.
- Responsible for following safety and code requirements and practices for all job duties.

Experience - 7-10 years of experience in equipment repair and maintenance.
- 2-3 years of golf course equipment maintenance experience.
Must have experience in the following areas:
- Equipment Maintenance of small and large engines. Both gas and diesel.
- Electrical operations (A/C and D/C).
- Hydraulic and plumbing operations.
- Welding, metal fabrication, and general construction.

- Working knowledge of light and heavy construction and maintenance equipment and of automotive apparatus.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Skill in the use of a wide variety of equipment repair tools and in the making of various types of mechanical repairs.
- Knowledge of the theory, care, and operation of internal combustion engines, hydraulic systems, and mower grinding, sharpening and adjustments.
- Ability to diagnose both mechanical and electrical troubles, schedule appropriate preventive maintenance work.
- Ability to weld, fabricate and machine repair parts, as necessary.
- Ability to diagnose and make repairs on gas, diesel, and small engines.
- Ability to organize and to cooperatively interact with course staff.
- Computer skills.
- Ability to operate light motorized and power equipment needed to complete required tasks.
- Ability to operate heavy weight motorized and power equipment and mowers as needed.
- Ability to follow oral and written directions.
Education - High school diploma and GED.
- Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent training in Automotive Technology or related field.
Other Requirements - Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Abilit to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
- Obtain and maintain a Kalispel Tribal Work Permit
- Valid driver's license.
- Possess a reliable form of transportation to and from the golf course to accommodate work schedule.
- Have flexible scheduling to accommodate operational demands.
Physical Demands - Occasionally involves work: exerting up to 75 pounds of force and/or up to 10 pounds of force and/or negligible amount of force to move objects.
- Occasionally lift and/or move more than 75 pounds.

Work Environment The work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The worker is exposed to working in extreme weather conditions including cool and wet, and hot and dry conditions. The worker is exposed to moving mechanical parts, vehicle emissions, mechanical noises, and airborne particles. The worker is also exposed to potentially hazardous chemicals, fuels, fertilizers, and other materials used in the maintenance of the golf course. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE's) will be provided as needed to perform the job.
