Campus Safety Specialists support school safety by providing supervision and assistance to ensure facility safety. This includes monitoring facility security protocols and practices as well as assisting with the supervision of safety guidelines for students, staff, and visitors.

SALARY: LEVEL 3 on the Educational Support Salary Schedule. Experience increments depend on experience in the same or similar permanent position within a Washington State public school up to 5 years.
Responsibilities

  1. Supervise campus and surrounding areas to ensure that students and staff are provided a safe and secure learning environment. Includes monitoring school buildings and grounds.
  2. Assist with the supervision of students at all areas of the campus needing direct supervision, including bus loading areas or other areas under the control of the district.
  3. Assist with ensuring students, staff, and visitors follow school safety guidelines and requirements.
  4. Establish positive working relationships with students, community, parents, and staff.
  5. Support other school staff with providing student interventions and supports as needed.
  6. Inform principal or counselor of student or family need for community resources.
  7. Assist and supervise activities outside of normal school day.
  8. Assist with access control & single point of entry.
  9. Monitor parking area and inform school administration of illegally parked cars, careless driving on school premises, or other concerns related to vehicles on campus.
  10. Check and report any hazardous conditions, disturbances, or suspicious circumstances.
  11. Conduct site (physical) assessments to determine facility safety and security concerns.
  12. Serve on site Safety Committee (standing member).
  13. Perform general security work as it pertains to the school district.
  14. Follow all district policies and procedures within the educational environment.
  15. Write reports documenting safety incidents as needed and directed by the Director of Campus Safety.
  16. Support building administrators with coordination of school emergency crisis plans. Ensure site maintains a current plan and support training staff members with appropriate actions to be taken in given situations.
  17. Assist with required school drills and exercises.
  18. Advise and train staff personnel in security/safety procedures and laws involving Spokane Public Schools.
  19. Assist building administration with action to be taken at scene of incidents and emergency situations.
  20. Assist in directing proper personnel to location of incidents.
  21. Assist with camera system use. Train staff members on the use of security system maintained by Spokane Public Schools.
  22. Provide documentation for input into a central reporting system for property damage resulting from burglary, vandalism, and arson whereby documented cost factors are available covering each incident.
  23. Respond to intrusion alarms on-site during work hours.
  24. Perform routine and special patrol assignments at schools and other district areas.
  25. Attend training as directed/provided.
  26. Perform other related responsibilities as directed by the principal/designee/ Director of Campus Safety.
Qualifications
  1. High school diploma or equivalent required, two years of college in Public Services field preferred, and a minimum of 3 years' experience working with youth.
  2. Demonstrated aptitude and ability for successful performance of the responsibilities listed.
  3. Demonstrated successful experience developing and maintaining positive and professional working relationships with a diverse group of students, staff, families, volunteers, and the community in a confidential manner.
  4. Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize workload.
  5. Ability to communicate positively and clearly both orally and in written form.
  6. Possess excellent computer skills; has knowledge of, and can use effectively, word processing and database software programs.
  7. Valid driver's license and access to personal transportation. A good driving record.
  8. Demonstrated ability to function successfully as a member of a team.
  9. Ability to successfully resolve/diffuse student/staff conflicts including use of small group problem solving, mediation and conflict resolution techniques.
  10. Knowledge of effective methods for handling and controlling youth behavior problems including peer mediation and intervention.
  11. Relates positively to youth and adults of varying socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
  12. Training and/or experience in drug/alcohol abuse awareness, prevention and control; trauma (ACEs); Implicit Bias; and Motivational Interviewing preferred
  13. Able to obtain first aid and CPR and AED certification.
  14. Willingness to work flexible hours.
  15. Use of personal vehicle, if necessary.
  16. Knowledge of applicable policies and procedures affecting area of responsibility.
  17. Ability to maintain self-control at all times and to react quickly and calmly under emergency conditions.

  1. Work Schedule - Days and hours (listed above) are subject to change depending on program and district needs.
  2. Stipends, Leave Accruals and Holidays - Stipends, leaves and paid holidays are in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement as negotiated.
