The Reentry Division within the Department of Corrections is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual to fill a full-time permanent Maintenance Mechanic 2 position that performs work at both Brownstone and Eleanor Chase House Reentry Centers in Spokane, Washington. Working hours for this position is determined by unit needs and are at the discretion of the unit supervisor. This position typically works Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Reporting to the Construction and Maintenance Project Supervisor, this journey level position performs a variety of skilled work in maintenance, repair, remodeling and construction of buildings, grounds, machinery, mechanical facilities and equipment and construction on building structures, roofs, walkways, driveways, roads, concrete/masonry, painting, furniture, cabinets, HVAC and refrigeration systems, vehicles and grounds maintenance located at the Reentry Center. Works independently and utilizes general knowledge of several related skill fields such as plumbing, electrical, welding, carpentry, and machinist work. Provide oversight of assigned individuals performing light maintenance and repair functions such as painting, floor reconditioning, lawn maintenance etc. The position helps ensure comfortable living conditions for individuals and safe working conditions for staff. It directly supports plant maintenance at which subsequently promotes public safety. The position directly supports the operation with assisting residents transitioning to the community which promotes public safety by positively changing lives and providing individuals with tools and resources for targeted opportunities to successfully transition into the community.

Duties Duties include, but are not limited to:
Performs skilled work in a number of trades fields including but not limited to carpentry, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, equipment maintenance/repair, masonry and painting: - Maintain, construct, alter and repair building structures, roofs, driveways, walkways, roads, concrete/masonry, painting, doors, walls, windows, drains, flooring, plumbing, fencing, furniture, cabinets, HVAC and refrigeration systems, vehicles and facility grounds.
- Coordinate projects with Construction Maintenance Project Supervisor and/or other facility staff. Operate hand tools, power tools and other shop equipment, operate grounds equipment, vehicles and various other maintenance related machinery.
- Installs, maintains, and repairs electrical connections, switches, circuits, electrical equipment, thermostats, and valves. Initiate requests for materials, supplies and equipment.
- Performs preventative maintenance and repairs on all types of mechanical equipment, vehicles, drive motors, laundry, kitchen; changes oil, greases, changes or cleans filters, drive belts, sprockets, shafts and bearings to ensure proper operation.
- Estimate, plan and order inventory, parts and supplies needed for projects as well as routine tasks.
- Consult with supervisor, vendors and/or others as required.
Provide oversight, direction, and guidance to assigned to incarcerated individuals performing light facility maintenance duties: - Complete assigned work orders and projects.
- Manage use of hand and power tools, paints, caulks, sealants, personal protective equipment and all other equipment used by individuals in the performance of their assigned duties.
Responsible for Monthly Safety & Sanitization Equipment Inspections, correcting any deficiencies and reporting hazards and/or non-functioning safety equipment. Participates in Monthly and Quarterly Safety Meetings. Follow safety and security procedures, comply with DOC Policy Directives, DRC Operational Memorandums, building and mechanical codes, L&I laws, EPA regulations, and all other applicable regulations and codes:
- Read and interpret blueprints and schematics.
- Maintain accurate records and documents for SDS, FTCM, tool control, key control, work order completion, material use and requisition, equipment requisition, and other required record keeping needed to conform to these regulations.
- Monitor safety, fire protection and environmental control equipment to ensure the building systems and equipment are operating in a satisfactory condition; respond to service request and secure necessary assistance; take preventative and emergency action to control malfunctions.
QualificationsRequired Qualifications: - High School Diploma or GED.
- A valid driver's license.
- Four years of general work experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction or repair work or completion of a recognized apprenticeship in a skilled mechanic trade.
Special Requirements: - Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
- Complete a felony disclosure form prior to employment and submit to a criminal background check.
- Successfully complete, within mandated timeframes, employee orientation and all other mandatory annual, in-service and other required training.
- Provide physical residential address and home telephone number to the Department of Corrections.
- Become familiar and comply with all Department policies and procedures and Collective Bargaining Agreements as applicable.
- Submit to drug testing in accordance with Collective Bargaining Agreement and agency policy.

Holidays Full-time and part-time employees are entitled to paid holidays and one paid personal holiday per calendar year.

Full-time employees who work full monthly schedules qualify for holiday compensation if they are employed before the holiday and are in pay status for at least 80 nonovertime hours during the month of the holiday; or for the entire work shift preceding the holiday.
Part-time employees who are in pay status during the month of the holiday qualify for the holiday on a pro-rata basis. Compensation for holidays (including personal holiday) will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status in the month to that required for full-time employment, excluding all holiday hours. Pay status includes hours worked and time on paid leave.
Sick Leave Full-time employees earn eight hours of sick leave per month. Overtime eligible employees who are in pay status for less than 80 hours per month, earn a monthly proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment. Overtime exempt employees who are in pay status for less than 80 hours per month do not earn a monthly accrual of sick leave.
Sick leave accruals for part-time employees will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment. Pay status includes hours worked, time on paid leave and paid holiday.
Vacation (Annual Leave) Full-time employees accrue vacation leave at the rates specified in (1) or the applicable collective bargaining agreement (CBA). Full-time employees who are in pay status for less than 80 nonovertime hours in a month do not earn a monthly accrual of vacation leave.
Part-time employees accrue vacation leave hours in accordance with (1) or the applicable collective bargaining agreement (CBA) on a pro rata basis. Vacation leave accrual will be proportionate to the number of hours in pay status, in the month to that required for full-time employment.
Pay status includes hours worked, time on paid leave and paid holiday.
As provided in , an employer may authorize a lump-sum accrual of vacation leave or accelerate the vacation leave accrual rate to support the recruitment and/or retention of a candidate or employee for a Washington Management Service position. Vacation leave accrual rates may only be accelerated using the rates established WAC 357-31-165.
Note: Most agencies follow the civil service rules covering leave and holidays for
exempt employees even though there is no requirement for them to do so. However, agencies are required to adhere to the applicable RCWs pertaining holidays and leave.
Military Leave Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year.
Bereavement Leave Most employees whose family member or household member dies, or for loss of pregnancy, are entitled to five (5) days of paid bereavement leave. In addition, the employer may approve other available leave types for the purpose of bereavement leave.
