SUMMARY

The Tshimakain Creek Lab Technician will be responsible for analyzing water for nutrients, bacteria and physical characteristics. Conducting drug testing and collections will also be a regular responsibility. The Tshimakain Creek Lab Technician will be responsible for special projects and all other duties as assigned. This position is scheduled for a minimum of 20 hours per week depending on workload. However, this position could transition into a full-time position (40 hours per week).

DESCRIPTION

Title: Tshimakain Creek Lab Technician

Work Schedule: Part-time (20 - 29 hours per week)/Non-exempt.

Reports to: Tshimakain Creek Lab General Manager

Location: Spokane Valley, WA

KEY ROLES and RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Follows correct protocol for the collection of urine samples and administering breathalyzer tests.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality.
  • Performs laboratory procedures following Spokane Tribal Enterprises/Tshimakain Creek Lab Policies and Procedures and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Records all required detailed information on custody control forms.
  • Keeps laboratory clean and orderly at all times.
  • Conducts water analysis using several different laboratory instruments.
  • Conducts instrument maintenance and troubleshooting, when needed.
  • Maintains logbooks and records for compliance with accreditation requirements.
  • Prepares media and reagents needed for laboratory analysis.
  • Provides assistance to ensure processes are followed and documents are accurately completed, in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Performs balances, pipetting and data entry.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Candidate must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Candidate must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License, maintain a good driving record, and have the ability to be insured under the Tribe's insurance policy.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service, including meeting quality standards for services and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Knowledge of administrative and office procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, and workplace terminology.
  • Proficient knowledge in Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Knows and adheres to customer service standards as outlined in Spokane Tribal Enterprises' Policies and Procedures, Standard Operating Procedures, and training.
  • Use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Reliable, responsible, and dependable in completing work tasks.
  • Display a good-natured cooperative attitude.
  • Courteous, business-like contact with co-workers, customers, vendors, and community at large.
  • Neat appearance and good personal hygiene, in compliance with Spokane Tribal Enterprises' standards.
  • Ability to work flexible shifts (all days of the week and hours, holidays, and special events).

  • Ability to travel for meetings, training, and to the different Enterprise locations, as required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Required: College level chemistry courses; 2 years' experience

Preferred: Associate degree or higher in Chemistry, Biology, or related field

A combination of education and experience may be considered as a substitute for degree requirement.

SUPERVISORY CONTROL
  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

  • Employee is regularly required to stand, talk, hear, use hand and fingers to operate a computer and telephone keyboard, reach, stoop, kneel, and sit for long periods of time.
  • Dexterity required due to working with small vials, test tubes, and delicate lab equipment.
  • Stamina required due to standing for long periods of time and at times hunched over a workstation for an extended period of time.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision requirements due to computer work and ability to sit at a computer terminal for an extended period of time.
  • Periodic exposure to potentially dangerous substances (flammable liquids, infectious bacteria, biohazards, etc.).
  • Moderate noise (i.e. business office with computers, phone, printers, and pedestrian traffic).
  • Bending, twisting and ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Maintain composure during stressful situations and conditions.
  • Follow policy and procedures in emergency situations, i.e. theft, robbery, power outages, network and equipment failures, etc.

COMPENSATION

This is a part-time/non-exempt position (minimum 20 hours per week). Pay rate is $20.00 per hour and DOQ/DOE. Benefits package includes personal time off (PTO) (accrual rate determined by years of service). Professional development opportunities are available contingent upon funding and approval.
