Assistant Controller (Remote - NJ/NY Area

Description:

An established insurance brokerage is seeking a Senior Accountant / Assistant Controller to join its growing finance team. This is a fully remote position supporting operations in the NJ/NY region. The ideal candidate will bring strong accounting expertise, leadership capability, and insurance industry experience.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Analysis

  • Prepare, review, and consolidate financial statements, including balance sheets and income statements
  • Perform monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial analyses
  • Analyze cost variances and conduct complex transaction analysis and data mining
  • Develop standard and ad-hoc financial reports and dashboards to provide insight into performance
Internal Controls & Compliance
  • Establish, maintain, and enhance internal control systems
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable regulatory requirements
  • Assist with internal and external audits, including preparation of audit workpapers
Accounting Operations
  • Manage and oversee the general ledger
  • Perform complex account and bank reconciliations
  • Prepare journal entries and support month-end and year-end close processes
  • Supervise accounts receivable, accounts payable, and general accounting staff
Budgeting & Forecasting
  • Assist with annual budgeting and financial forecasting
  • Analyze financial data to support strategic and operational decision-making
  • Monitor and evaluate key performance indicators (KPIs)
Team & Stakeholder Support
  • Supervise and mentor junior accounting staff
  • Serve as a liaison between accounting, internal departments, and external auditors
  • Provide financial insights and analytical support to leadership and operations teams
Qualifications & Experience

  • CPA required
  • Prior experience in a P&C brokerage or MGA insurance environment strongly preferred
  • Experience with multi-entity accounting
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards
  • Proven leadership and supervisory experience
Compensation

  • Salary range: $75,000 - $100,000, commensurate with experience
