Laboratory Quality Coordinator
Position Summary
Plays a key role in ensuring accuracy, safety, and regulatory compliance in Kootenai Health Laboratory. This position oversees laboratory quality assurance activities, administers proficiency, competency, and safety programs, and supports workforce development through coordination of the laboratory preceptor program. This position works closely with the laboratory leadership and/or external education partners to maintain high standards of quality and training.
Responsibilities
• Assists with any technical processes that support laboratory quality assurance
• Updates, revises, and maintains applicable policies/procedures and records
• Completes mandatory training requirements
• Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the field
• Administers the Proficiency Testing (PT) program, including assignment of PT samples, ensuring timely completion, submission of results, distribution of reports, and assistance with investigations as needed
• Documents compliance with CAP checklist standards
• Oversees laboratory safety requirements and other assigned CAP standards
• Ensures quality assurance and quality control testing is performed in a timely manner per regulatory requirements
• Ensures quality data, including but not limited to, analytical measuring range verification, calibration verification, method comparisons and lot verifications, is documented and assessed per regulatory requirements
• Identifies quality issues and document any non-conforming events, including follow-up monitoring to measure the effectiveness of the corrective action
• Ensures instrument and equipment performance documentation is current and complete, including installation qualification (IQ), operational qualifications (OQ), and performance qualification (PQ)
• Schedules training for new employees and students
• Responsible for recruiting preceptors and ensuring preceptor training is completed appropriately
• Maintains the laboratory document and records management system
• Supports proper documentation for reagent and inventory
• Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals
• Regular and predictable attendance is an essential job function
• Performs other related duties as assigned
• Competent to meet age specific needs of the unit assigned
Requirements and Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Microbiology, Chemistry, Biology or related science required. At the discretion of laboratory Director, other college degrees or non-degree educational preparation may be acceptable. At a minimum, 90 hours of documented college courses, to include courses in Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics are required
• Documented training in clinical laboratory focused Hematology, Chemistry, Microbiology, and Blood Banking is generally required. Depending on the existing need of KH laboratory, the laboratory director may waive training in one of more of these specialties depending on the need
• Documentation of successful completion of examination for medical technologist, clinical laboratory scientist, medical laboratory scientist or equivalent. A copy of the certificate of completion must be provided for KH personnel files. Examples of acceptable agency examinations are: ASCP, NCA, HHS, or AMT
• Minimum 4 years' experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist working in a hospital laboratory required
• Completion of KH Preceptor training preferred
• Ability to interpret a variety of data furnished from different sources (i.e., written, verbal, statistical, historical trends)
• Demonstrated ability to use computer skills including keyboarding and practical data entry into data-based software program
